Anigozanthos is a genus of Australian kangaroo paws, a group of clump-forming perennials with narrow, grasslike to sword-shaped leaves and unusual furry, tubular flowers on upright stalks. Species and hybrids vary substantially in flower color, plant size, and longevity, so identify the particular selection before applying cultivar-specific dimensions or hardiness.
## Landscape Use
The [Australian National Botanic Gardens](https://anbg.gov.au/anigozanthos/index.html) describes kangaroo paws as useful garden plants and good cut flowers; the [ABC Gardening Australia plant guide](https://www.abc.net.au/gardening/plant-finder/anigozanthos/9441246) also lists containers and rockeries among their uses. Flower color ranges across the genus, including yellow, green, pink, and red tones, and should be confirmed for the selected species or cultivar. Nectar-bearing flowers are pollinated by birds.
## Siting and Seasonal Interest
Most kangaroo paws grow best in a sunny position with freely draining soil. Flowers generally appear over spring and summer, though the timing and flowering strength differ by species and climate. Some selections are short-lived or treated as annuals in particular regions; do not assume every kangaroo paw has the same hardiness or winter behavior.
## Maintenance
Avoid overwatering in cool weather and keep the crown from sitting in wet soil. Remove damaged foliage and spent stems as needed. Ink disease can cause dark leaf blotches, especially in cool, moist conditions, and slugs or snails may damage young growth.
## South Australia fire-resistant list
[State Flora](https://cdn.environment.sa.gov.au/stateflora/docs/fire-resistant-plants-fact.pdf) lists Anigozanthos at genus level and advises removing dead foliage and stems in accordance with local bushfire-prevention requirements. This general entry does not establish that each species or cultivar was individually assessed.
## Queensland bushfire guidance
[Queensland's guidance](https://www.qra.qld.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-12/0576_qra_bushfire_guideline_v10_pages_print.pdf) lists this genus in Appendix E. This broad listing does not establish that each species or cultivar was individually assessed; check local suitability and fire resistance.
