Soursop is a tropical evergreen tree with a rounded crown, leathery leaves, and dark green fruit covered in flexible spines. Its tangy white pulp is eaten fresh or used in drinks and desserts, and the tree needs a warm, frost-free site to grow well.
## Form and use
The [University of Arizona Campus Arboretum](https://apps.cals.arizona.edu/arboretum/taxon.aspx?id=1172) describes *Annona muricata* as a rounded tree about 7.5–9 m tall and 11–15 feet wide, with yellow-green flowers and spiny, oval-to-heart-shaped fruit. Fruit trees may be kept smaller with pruning; the [UF/IFAS commercial grove guide](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/HS1387.pdf) describes a managed height of 8–12 feet. The fruit is used fresh and in beverages or desserts; its seeds contain toxic alkaloids, so do not eat them.
## Climate and care
[Kew’s Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/14308-2) accepts the name *Annona muricata* and places it in wet tropical habitats. The University of Arizona Arboretum lists USDA zones 10b–11, notes frost tenderness, and recommends moist, well-drained soil. Established trees tolerate some drought, but prolonged dry periods can cause leaf drop. Protect the tree from frost and cold winds, and irrigate during extended dry weather.
## Maintenance
Keep the tree in a warm, sheltered position and maintain even moisture during establishment and dry periods. Remove dead or damaged wood as needed, and harvest fruit when mature.
