Earlybird™ Yellow Shades is a compact columbine in the Earlybird series, with bright yellow flowers held above a well-mounded plant. Its spring display can continue into summer, bringing color to partly shaded perennial borders and pollinator plantings.
## Seasonal Interest
Yellow flowers begin in early spring and continue through summer. PanAmerican Seed identifies the selection as PAS1258489, and the Royal Horticultural Society records the same code in the Earlybird Series ([PanAmerican Seed](https://www.panamseed.com/Products/005709017006060/aquilegia-earlybird-yellow/); [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/504474/aquilegia-earlybird-yellow-pas1258489-earlybird-series/details)).
## Growing Conditions
Grow columbine in partial shade or sun where soil stays moist but drains freely. This selection suits mixed borders; columbines also work in naturalized and pollinator plantings, where their flowers attract hummingbirds and other pollinators ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/aquilegia/)).
## Maintenance
Water during dry spells while the plant establishes, and avoid persistently waterlogged soil. After flowering, trim spent stems for a tidy display or leave a few seedheads where self-sowing is welcome.
