Utah Columbine is the species Aquilegia scopulorum, a compact mountain columbine native to Utah and Nevada. The [National Park Service](https://www.nps.gov/brca/learn/nature/rockcolumbine.htm) describes plants 6–8 inches tall in gravelly subalpine habitat, with blue to blue-violet flowers in May through July. [North Carolina State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/aquilegia-scopulorum/) describes dense mounding foliage, medium-blue long-spurred flowers in spring, and moderate rebloom into summer and fall.
## Siting
Use it where its small scale can be appreciated, such as a rock garden, trough, crevice, or the edge of a well-drained bed. In the wild it occupies rocky, high-elevation terrain; in gardens it prefers partial shade, though it can grow in full sun when irrigation is available. The extension recommends well-drained, low-nitrogen soil and notes its association with high-pH or drying clay soils. It is poorly suited to hot, humid summers.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and through extended dry spells, especially in sunny locations. Good drainage matters more than keeping the root zone constantly wet. Seed propagation can be slow and uneven; cold stratification may improve germination, but results remain variable.
