Swan Blue and White is a clump-forming columbine with large spurred flowers, purple-blue outer petals and white inner petals. Upright stems rise above divided blue-green foliage, bringing a spring display to cottage borders, woodland beds, and cut-flower groupings.
## Flowers and placement
The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/187237/aquilegia-swan-blue-and-white/details) describes flowers borne from early spring into summer and lists the plant for flower borders, wildlife gardens, and cut flowers. PanAmerican Seed’s [Swan F1 brochure](https://www.panamseed.com/PdfAssets/pdfpage.aspx?pdfid=15) identifies Swan as an Aquilegia hybrida series and lists USDA zones 3–8. RHS describes the cultivar as short-lived and clump-forming.
## Growing conditions
Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. In warmer gardens, partial shade can help protect the foliage during hot afternoons. Columbines may self-seed, and seedlings may not repeat the named flower colors.
## Seasonal role
Use this blue-and-white form among spring perennials or as a small cut-flower accent; its tall stems rise above a low mound of foliage. RHS gives a general bloom interval from early spring into summer, with timing varying by climate.
## Maintenance
Deadhead regularly to reduce self-seeding and encourage further flowers. Cut foliage back after flowering to promote fresh growth. Watch for leaf miners and sawfly, which can mark the leaves around flowering time.
