Create design onlineAbout Swan Burgundy And White Aquilegia
Swan Burgundy and White is a clump-forming columbine with large, spurred flowers in red-burgundy and white. Its divided foliage forms a basal mound, while upright stems carry the flowers above it for a spring accent in cottage borders, woodland edges, and cut-flower plantings.
## Flowers and placement
The [RHS profile for Aquilegia ‘Louisiana’](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/158938/aquilegia-louisiana-state-series/details) lists Swan Burgundy and White as a synonym and describes red sepals and spurs around white petals. PanAmerican Seed’s [Swan brochure](https://www.panamseed.com/PdfAssets/pdfpage.aspx?pdfid=15) independently lists Swan Burgundy and White as a named Swan F1 form.
## Growing conditions
Choose full sun or partial shade and fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely. RHS describes the Swan series as flowering from early spring into summer; exact timing varies with climate. Columbines may self-seed and seedlings may not repeat the parent’s flower color.
## Seasonal role
The dark outer flower color gives contrast against pale spring flowers and green foliage. Use groups in informal borders or cut stems while the buds are opening.
## Maintenance
Deadhead regularly if you want to limit self-seeding and keep the display neat. After flowering, cut back faded foliage; avoid unnecessary division because established columbines can be slow to recover from root disturbance.
