Create design onlineAbout Winky Double Red-White Aquilegia
Aquilegia vulgaris 'Winky Double Red-White' is a compact, mounded perennial with abundant double flowers in a red-and-white pattern. Its blossoms face upward on sturdy stems above divided green foliage, creating a bright late-spring and early-summer display.
## Flowers and garden use
The Winky Double series is useful in containers and low borders, and the flowers can be cut for arrangements. The plant is generally short-lived and may self-seed; seedlings can vary from the named cultivar. Ball Seed and Gardenia both report mature height and spread of 12–14 inches; growing conditions can affect the final size.
## Siting and soil
Plant in full sun or partial shade in average to moist, well-drained soil. Columbines can cope with some shade, but flowering is strongest with adequate light and consistent moisture. Avoid saturated soil.
## Maintenance
Remove faded stems to encourage further flowers or to limit self-seeding. If you want seedlings, leave a few stems to mature seed. Cut declining foliage back after flowering, and watch for leaf miners or sawfly that may mark the leaves.
