Winky Mix Columbine is a uniform, bushy selection grown for abundant, upward-facing flowers in a range of bicolors, including blue-and-white, purple-and-white, red-and-white, and rose tones. Its compact clumps bring a bright spring display to borders, woodland plantings, and containers, and the flowers can be cut for small arrangements.
### Size and placement
Reported mature size varies: one nursery lists 16–18 inches tall by 12–18 inches wide, while another lists 15–20 inches in both directions. Give it room for a rounded clump, and choose full sun in cooler climates or partial shade in warmer sites. Flowering is typically in late spring into early summer ([Van Wilgen’s Winky Mix listing](https://www.vanwilgens.com/plant/winky-mix-columbine/); [Bron & Sons](https://www.bronandsons.com/products/line/?category=all&page=11)).
### Soil and seasonal care
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water consistently while it establishes ([Bron & Sons](https://www.bronandsons.com/products/line/?category=all&page=11); [RHS Aquilegia guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/aquilegia/growing-guide)). Columbines tolerate some shade and are useful among later perennials that take over as their spring display fades. The Winky line is noted for mildew tolerance, though good spacing and airflow remain helpful. As a mixed seed selection, seedlings may not repeat the same color combinations.
## Maintenance
Remove faded flowers if you want to limit self-seeding; leave some seed heads if naturalizing is desired. After bloom, trim declining foliage to make room for fresh growth. Keep soil from becoming persistently waterlogged or completely dry.
