Earlybird™ Purple White is a compact hybrid columbine with purple and white flowers above a tidy mound of divided green foliage. It brings a strong two-color display to the front of a border or a container, and its flowering begins earlier than the other Earlybird colors.
## Flowers and size
PanAmerican Seed identifies this selection as ‘PAS1258486’ and lists a mature height of 9–11 inches and spread of 8–10 inches, with flowers from early spring through summer. Its [cultivar page](https://www.panamseed.com/products/005709017004400/aquilegia-earlybird-purple-white/) presents the Earlybird series traits; the [Purple White page](https://www.panamseed.com/products/005709017004400/aquilegia-earlybird-purple-white/) gives the selection’s flowering window and confirms that it flowers two to three days ahead of the rest of the series. The [RHS Aquilegia guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/aquilegia/growing-guide) describes columbines’ spurred flowers and their spring-to-early-summer garden role.
## Siting
Plant in sun or partial shade in fertile soil that stays moist without becoming waterlogged. The compact dimensions suit the front of a mixed border, woodland edge, or pot with reliable drainage.
## Maintenance
Water newly planted columbines while they establish. After flowering, remove spent stems for a tidier plant and to limit self-seeding; leave some seed heads if you want seedlings, which may not match the parent. Cut back old foliage when it yellows.
