Create design onlineAbout Earlybird™ Red White Aquilegia
Earlybird™ Red White is a compact hybrid columbine whose red and white flowers add a clear color contrast to early-season plantings. Its short stature makes it useful near the front of a mixed border, in a woodland-edge bed, or in a container.
## Flowers and size
PanAmerican Seed lists the exact selection as ‘PAS1258484’, flowering from early spring through summer at 9–11 inches tall and 8–10 inches wide. The breeder’s [Red White page](https://www.panamseed.com/products/005709017004575/aquilegia-earlybird-red-white/) confirms the cultivar identity and series size, habit, and bloom season. The [RHS growing guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/aquilegia/growing-guide) describes Aquilegia’s spurred flowers and recommends sunny or semi-shaded positions with rich, moist, freely draining soil.
## Siting
Give it sun or partial shade and soil that holds some moisture while draining freely. A spot that is too dry in summer or persistently wet can shorten the useful display.
## Maintenance
Water new plants as they establish. Once flowers fade, remove stems if you want to prevent self-seeding and refresh the foliage, or leave a few seed heads for volunteers; seedlings from hybrids may not resemble this cultivar. Remove old leaves as they yellow.
