Create design onlineAbout Illawarra Bangalow Palm
The Illawarra Bangalow Palm is the eastern Australian rainforest palm *Archontophoenix cunninghamiana*, valued for its solitary ringed trunk and high crown of long, feather-like fronds. Mature trees carry lilac flowers and bright red fruit, giving this evergreen palm a strong vertical presence in warm, moisture-reliable landscapes.
## Form and placement
The species can exceed 15 m and has fronds several metres long, so reserve overhead and lateral room and use it as a specimen or tall canopy accent rather than beside confined paths. Its native range extends from Queensland into New South Wales, where it grows in wet forest, streamside and swampy settings. Bright filtered light or partial shade is suitable; established plants can also grow in full sun when water is plentiful.
## Growing conditions
Provide fertile, organic-rich soil that retains moisture while draining freely. Water regularly, especially in dry weather, and protect young palms from cold exposure; the species tolerates some cool conditions but is not reliably frost tolerant. Root disturbance can make transplanting difficult, so plant carefully and early.
## Maintenance
Remove only dead fronds, using care around the crown and trunk. Watch for ragged leaflets from palm dart caterpillars and for scale or mealybugs. Red fruits can attract birds and seedlings may spread beyond cultivation in some regions, so check local weed guidance before planting.
