About Vancouver Jade Kinnickinnick

Vancouver Jade is a compact, evergreen bearberry selected for its glossy foliage, spring flowers, and persistent red fruit. Its low, spreading growth suits slopes, rock gardens, and the edges of walls where a durable groundcover can knit the soil together. ## Appearance and landscape use This cultivar forms a dense mat of small, leathery green leaves. Pinkish-white, urn-shaped flowers appear in spring, followed by red berries; foliage can turn bronze or red in colder weather ([Loen Nursery](https://www.loennursery.com/collections/availability-list/products/ars-uv-vjd), [Blue Sky Nursery](https://blueskynursery.ca/products/arctostaphylos-uva-ursi-vancouver-jade/)). [Woodbrook Native Plant Nursery](https://woodbrooknativeplantnursery.com/plant/arctostaphylos-uva-ursi-kinnikinnick-vancouver-jade/) identifies Vancouver Jade as a cultivated selection developed by the University of British Columbia. ## Siting and soil Plant in full sun to part shade in acidic, sandy or otherwise well-drained soil. It tolerates poor soils, but avoid persistently waterlogged sites. Allow room for a broad spread; sources vary, with mature descriptions ranging from about 3 to 6 feet wide and roughly 6 to 12 inches tall. Water regularly while it establishes, then reduce irrigation as roots settle in. ## Maintenance Keep weeds down while the groundcover fills in and water during prolonged dry spells, especially during establishment. Routine shaping is usually unnecessary; remove damaged or dead branches as needed.
