It forms suckering stems and carries arching fronds with notably pale, silvery undersides, giving it a bold, tropical look with unusual cold tolerance for a palm. ## Form and placement This is a substantial palm for a sheltered specimen planting where its fronds and mature spread have room. Its mountain origin does not by itself establish a USDA hardiness zone, so protect young plants and assess local winter conditions. ## Soil and water Use a fertile, freely draining soil and water regularly while the palm establishes. Keep the root zone evenly moist during active growth, while avoiding prolonged waterlogging. ## Maintenance Remove only dead or damaged fronds with clean tools, taking care around the fibrous leaf bases. Allow space for suckers to develop, or remove them selectively if a single-trunk appearance is preferred.
