About Thrift (Armeria)

Armeria is a genus of evergreen perennials known for compact tufts or mats of narrow leaves and rounded flower clusters held above the foliage. The genus includes many species, so flower color, mature size, and growing requirements vary; the coastal thrift commonly grown in gardens is *A. maritima*. [Kew lists 101 accepted Armeria species](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:30024238-2), while the [RHS describes the genus form](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/99142/armeria-maritima-bloodstone/details). ## Choosing a site For *A. maritima*, choose sun and sharply drained, lean soil; it is suited to rock gardens, gravel beds, and edging. Avoid applying those species-specific preferences to every Armeria: identify the species or cultivar first. [Wisconsin Horticulture](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/sea-thrift-armeria-maritima/) describes sea thrift's drainage needs and landscape uses. ## Maintenance For sea thrift (*A. maritima*), remove faded stalks and protect the crown from winter-wet soil; needs vary among species.
