About Upright Red Chokeberry

Red chokeberry ‘Erecta’ is an upright, deciduous form with erect branches that may arch as the shrub matures. Its dark green leaves turn red in autumn; small white, sometimes pink-tinged flowers appear in late spring and are followed by red fruits. The RHS profile gives a height of 1.5–2.5 m and spread of 1–1.5 m, while Ohio State Extension reports about 7 by 4 feet ([RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/98354/aronia-arbutifolia-erecta/details); [Ohio State University Extension](https://plantfacts.osu.edu/pdf/0246-122.pdf)). ## In the Garden Use this shrub where a more upright outline suits a mixed border or informal screen. Red fruit and fall foliage extend interest beyond the late-spring flowering period; fruit persistence and fall color intensity vary with site and weather. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun or partial shade. RHS lists clay, loam, and sandy soils and recommends moist but well-drained conditions. The species can sucker, so allow space around the base and avoid placing it where root spread would be difficult to manage. ## Maintenance Prune after flowering only when shaping is needed, and remove unwanted suckers to control spread. Mulch to moderate soil moisture while the shrub establishes. Leave the naturally upright branches intact if an informal, taller outline is preferred.
