Autumn Magic is a deciduous black chokeberry with glossy green leaves, clusters of white spring flowers, and a strong red-to-purple autumn display. Purple-black fruits can remain into winter, extending the shrub’s interest after flowering has finished.
## Form and seasonal display
The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/115404/aronia-melanocarpa-autumn-magic/details) describes an upright, vase-shaped, suckering shrub about 2 metres tall, with spring flowers and fruit that lasts into winter. Its published mature size range is broad; one current [wholesale listing](https://www.wilsonsnurseryinc.com/catalog2026.pdf) gives 5–7 feet high and 2–4 feet wide, while the catalog’s existing 4–6 foot dimensions remain plausible and are retained. Expect size and outline to vary with growing conditions and suckering.
## Siting
Grow in full sun or partial shade. Moist but well-drained soil suits the plant; the RHS lists clay, loam, and sand, with acid or neutral pH. It works in wildlife gardens, informal borders, and hedging, provided there is room for root suckers. Do not use UK hardiness ratings as USDA zones. Berries are edible but bitter and strongly astringent raw; this cultivar is commonly grown for ornamental foliage and fruit rather than a fresh-fruit crop.
## Maintenance
Water new plants until established and during prolonged dry spells. Remove unwanted suckers while dormant if a tighter footprint is needed. Pruning is optional for a natural shrub form; remove dead or crossing stems and renew older stems selectively when needed.
