About Silvermound Sage Brush

Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Silvermound’ is a low-growing evergreen perennial that forms a rounded mound of finely divided, soft silver foliage. Its compact shape brings a light texture to sunny borders, rock gardens, and containers, where pale leaves contrast with darker plants. ## Growing Conditions Plant it in full sun and sharply drained soil; rocky or gravelly ground suits it. Published mature size varies by source: the Royal Horticultural Society gives 0.1–0.5 m in both height and spread, while the KPU Plant Database describes the species at about 0.2–0.4 m tall and 0.3–0.6 m wide. Leave room for the mound to broaden as it matures. ## Seasonal Character The foliage is the main ornamental feature. The RHS reports occasional pale-yellow flowers in summer, while KPU notes small yellow flowerheads in autumn; timing varies with climate and the source’s taxonomic scope. See the [RHS profile for Silver Mound](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/522012/artemisia-schmidtiana-silver-mound/details) and [KPU’s Artemisia schmidtiana record](https://plantdatabase.kpu.ca/Plant/arsc) for cultivar and species details. ## Maintenance Keep the crown out of waterlogged soil. Trim damaged stems or lightly shape the mound when needed. Divide the plant if it spreads beyond its allotted space, and avoid routine hard pruning that cuts into older growth.
