Create design onlineAbout Basin Big Sagebrush
Basin big sagebrush is an evergreen western shrub with aromatic, wedge-shaped leaves and a branching crown. It occupies valleys, plains, and lower foothills, where deep-rooted plants contribute lasting cover to sagebrush communities.
## Growing Conditions
Provide sun and deep, well-drained soil ranging from loamy to sandy. The USDA NRCS guide describes basin big sagebrush as commonly 3–6 feet tall, with favorable plants reaching much larger sizes. Allow room for its variable mature form and avoid treating any one dimension as a species limit. The [USDA NRCS plant guide](https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/plantmaterials/idpmcpg6294.pdf) distinguishes the basin subspecies from other big sagebrush forms; the [US Forest Service review](https://research.fs.usda.gov/feis/species-reviews/arttrit) describes its habitat and ecotype variation.
## Seasonal Character
Persistent blue-gray to blue-green leaves provide structure through the year and release a strong aroma when brushed. The basin form is associated with deep, seasonally dry valley soils and lower foothills. Populations vary with local conditions, so match planting choices to the site and the plant’s expected mature spread.
## Maintenance
Protect the root zone from prolonged saturation and provide enough soil depth for establishment. Give the shrub space to branch naturally. Prune only to remove damaged growth or address a specific clearance need.
