Wild Ginger

Asarabacca, also called European wild ginger, is a compact evergreen perennial that forms a carpet of glossy, kidney-shaped leaves. Its quiet, low-growing foliage is useful for covering shaded ground beneath shrubs and trees, while the small flowers remain mostly hidden under the leaves. ## Garden Use and Siting Grow this species as a slow, mat-forming groundcover or edging plant in a woodland garden. It prefers full or partial shade and humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains freely. The plant is not a culinary ginger; its common name refers to the genus rather than an edible use. ## Maintenance Once established, allow the carpet to fill in gradually and avoid letting the soil dry completely. A light mulch of leaf mold or compost every year or two can help keep the root zone cool and fertile; routine pruning is not required.
