Soulmate is an upright, clump-forming swamp milkweed selected for rosy pink flowers with contrasting white centers. Its narrow green leaves and fragrant flower clusters add height and late-season color to a sunny border, rain garden, or butterfly planting.
## Flowers and wildlife
Flowers are produced in dense clusters from midsummer into early fall, followed by narrow pods that release silky seeds, as described by the [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/137522/asclepias-incarnata-soulmate/details). The cultivar's flowers attract butterflies, and swamp milkweed is a host plant for monarch caterpillars, as noted by the [Chicago Botanic Garden](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/asclepias-incarnata-soulmate-swamp-milkweed). Sources place mature plants around 3–5 feet tall and roughly 1.5–2 feet wide, with some variation by growing conditions.
## Siting
Choose full sun and soil that remains moist; the species also grows in clay, loam, and sand and can tolerate wetter ground. It may adapt to average garden soil, but prolonged drought can reduce vigor. Plant it where it can remain in place, since milkweed roots are not suited to frequent disturbance.
## Maintenance
Routine pruning is generally unnecessary. Remove seedpods before they split if you want to limit volunteers, or leave them for natural reseeding. The sap is milky and can be harmful if eaten; use care when cutting stems.
