Cast iron plant is a slow-growing, evergreen perennial with broad, upright leaves carried from rhizomes. In a garden, use it as a broad-leaved groundcover or accent in a sheltered shady bed. It also grows well in containers where light is indirect. Mature size varies by source and growing conditions: the RHS gives about 60 cm tall and wide, and North Carolina Extension reports clumps up to about 2 feet. ### Soil and water Plant in rich, well-drained soil. Keep the root zone evenly moist during active growth, then water more sparingly in winter. Although established plants can tolerate dry periods, prolonged drought and soggy soil are both poor conditions. ## Maintenance This plant is slow-growing and usually needs little routine attention. Remove old or damaged leaves at the base as needed, and protect outdoor clumps from cold winter winds. Divide crowded rhizomes only when a clump needs renewing or transplanting.
