*Aster* ‘Winston Churchill’ is a named late-season aster with upright stems and semi-double, cerise-red flowers around yellow centers. It brings color to perennial borders as summer flowers fade, and its flower clusters can also be cut for arrangements.
## Identity and seasonal color
[Thompson & Morgan](https://www.thompson-morgan.com/p/aster-novibelgii-winston-churchill/wka4760TM) identifies it as *Aster novi-belgii* ‘Winston Churchill’ and gives the modern name *Symphyotrichum novi-belgii*; the listing describes cerise-red flowers with golden centers from late summer into autumn. The [RHS guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/aster/growing-guide) explains that New York asters formerly called *Aster novi-belgii* are now *Symphyotrichum novi-belgii*. The French National Horticultural Society’s [aster guide](https://www.jardinsdefrance.org/les-asters-stars-de-nos-jardinsen-automne/) also lists ‘Winston S. Churchill’ under *Symphyotrichum novi-belgii* and describes red flowers.
## Siting and size
Grow in full sun or light shade in fertile soil that remains moderately moist but drains well. Thompson & Morgan lists about 80 cm ultimate height and spread. [Bedwen Plants](https://bedwenplants.co.uk/aster-winston-churchill.html) independently lists the named plant under *Aster novi-belgii*, describes upright growth and red, semi-double flowers, and gives a 50–100 cm height and 75 cm spread. These listings support a roughly 0.7–0.8 m plant, with variation by growing conditions.
## Maintenance
Water after planting and during dry spells, especially while plants establish. Leave space around the clump for air movement. Remove faded flowers for tidiness, and divide established clumps every few years if they become crowded or lose vigor.
