‘Abbey Road’ is a vigorous, clump-forming Astrantia with deep reddish-purple flowerheads, pale bases and prominent bracts on dark stems. The cut-flower selection also makes a long-lasting feature in sunny or partly shaded perennial beds.
## Cultivar and size
The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/208898/astrantia-major-abbey-road/details) describes an upright clump to about 80 cm tall, with deeply divided dark-green leaves and deep reddish-purple summer flowers with white bases. It lists full sun or partial shade and a broad mature spread range of 10–50 cm. [University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/astrantia-astrantia-major/) describes ‘Abbey Road’ as a vigorous, free-flowering vegetative selection developed for cut-flower production, with violet-purple flowers on dark stems reaching about 28 inches. The sources support its cultivar identity and color while showing that reported spread varies.
## Siting
Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist, in sun or partial shade. The plant tolerates drier conditions once established but performs best with reliable moisture, especially in warm weather. Use it in borders, cottage gardens or cutting beds where the intricate umbels can be seen up close.
## Maintenance
Snip fading flower stems at their base to encourage a longer display. Divide crowded clumps in spring if needed, and keep the soil from drying out during prolonged warm spells.
