About Star of Magic Masterwort

‘Star of Magic’ is a clump-forming masterwort selected for cream-edged foliage and dark pink to purple-red flower heads. Its display can include both spring and autumn flowering, with young leaves sometimes carrying a pink or purple-red tint. ## Flowers and Garden Use The RHS cultivar profile describes toothed, five-lobed leaves edged and splashed with cream, sometimes tinged pink, and dark pink umbels surrounded by matching bracts. A US plant patent describes white-and-green variegation that persists through summer, purple-red young foliage, and two flowering periods—May to June and September to October in the Netherlands. Astrantia’s small flower clusters are most effective at close range in cottage borders, woodland edges and cut-flower plantings. Keep the soil consistently moist during dry weather, especially in sunny positions; full shade can reduce flowering. Water through dry spells and cut back old flowering stems when the display ends. Slugs, aphids and leaf miner can affect Astrantia.
