About Athyrium filix-femina

Common lady fern is a deciduous, clump-forming perennial with finely divided, fresh-green fronds that arch from a central crown. It brings a soft, feathery layer to woodland plantings and shaded borders, where its seasonal growth contrasts with broad-leaved perennials. ## Landscape use Use in a woodland garden, shady border, or beside a pond or stream where the soil stays moist. Clumps slowly widen and can form a loose ground layer without becoming aggressive. Fronds may reach roughly 2–3 feet in height, with spread varying by site and selection. ## Growing conditions Give it full or partial shade and fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It tolerates more sun where soil remains consistently moist. The species is widely distributed across temperate regions; local lady ferns may be treated under different taxonomic names, so use regional flora for native-plant identification. NCSU Extension lists USDA zones 3a–7b for common lady fern. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and prolonged dry periods. Leave old fronds through winter where crown protection is useful, then clear dead foliage in spring. Divide established clumps in spring if they become crowded.
