Atractocarpus fitzalanii is an evergreen tropical shrub or small tree with glossy foliage, fragrant white flowers, and large yellow fruit that ripens when soft. Its rounded canopy suits a warm courtyard, sheltered feature position, or informal screen where there is room for a 5–8 m plant.
## Form and seasonal interest
The species is native to coastal Queensland rainforest. Smooth grey bark and broad, dark green leaves give it a dense, leafy presence. Fragrant, star-shaped flowers appear in spring, with flowering reported from September to November in northern Queensland; fleshy yellow fruit follows and ripens over winter. Birds may take the fruit. The ripe flesh is edible, but unripe fruit should not be eaten.
## Siting and soil
Grow in a warm, frost-free or nearly frost-free setting with full sun to part shade. Young plants benefit from shelter from harsh afternoon sun and drying wind. Use moisture-retentive but free-draining soil; mulch and water through dry periods, especially while establishing. Although an established plant can tolerate some dryness, it performs best with consistent moisture. Container growing is possible with regular watering and pruning.
## Maintenance
Keep the root zone mulched and water during prolonged dry weather. Prune after flowering or as needed to control size and encourage a dense screen; remove damaged growth. Check young foliage for spider mites and protect young plants from frost and hot dry wind.
