Cohune palm

Attalea cohune is a solitary, feather-leaved palm of wet tropical Central America. Its broad crown of very long pinnate leaves and eventual tall trunk make it a dramatic specimen for spacious tropical landscapes, botanical collections, and large parks. ## Form and use Plants develop a single trunk and a crown of arching to spreading leaves. Published accounts describe mature heights from about 12 m to 24 m, with fronds near 6 m long; allow substantial clearance from buildings and paths. The fruits contain an oil-rich nut, and the leaves have traditional thatching uses. Kew records the species from southern Mexico to Honduras and Colombia, in wet tropical habitats, and also documents food and material uses. ## Siting This palm is best suited to frost-free tropical conditions with generous root space and room overhead. The botanical references confirm its wet-tropical origin but do not establish a precise garden watering schedule or soil pH; avoid treating it as a dry-climate palm. ## Maintenance Provide space for the mature crown and keep the planting area clear of falling fruit and old fronds. Remove only dead or hazardous leaves with suitable palm-care equipment. Protect the crown and trunk from cold exposure; young plants need consistent moisture while establishing.
