Aucuba japonica is a rounded, slow-growing evergreen shrub prized for its leathery, glossy foliage and exceptional shade tolerance. Reaching heights of six to ten feet, it features elliptic green leaves often splashed with gold, earning it the name Gold Dust Plant. This dioecious species produces small maroon flowers in spring, followed by bright red berries on female plants if a male is nearby. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil and is ideal for urban hedges or woodland borders.
