About Subulata Austrocylindropuntia

Eve's needle cactus is a tree-like, columnar succulent from the Peruvian Andes, with upright branching stems, knobby joints, awl-shaped fleshy leaves, and clusters of long pale spines. It can become a substantial specimen outdoors in warm climates, while container plants usually remain smaller and may not flower. Place it where the sculptural stems can be viewed safely and kept away from paths, play areas, and pets. ## Light, soil, and water The [North Carolina Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/austrocylindropuntia-subulata/) lists USDA zones 9–11, full sun or partial shade, and sharply drained soil. Water thoroughly during active growth, then let the potting mix dry before watering again. [T-Y Nursery lists this species as drought tolerant with low water needs once established](https://www.tynursery.com/plant-library/item/austrocylindropuntia-subulata/). The [University of Arizona Campus Arboretum](https://apps.cals.arizona.edu/arboretum/taxon.aspx?id=1185) advises keeping plants drier through winter and gradually acclimating them to direct sun. Cold and prolonged humidity can cause damage; protect container plants before frost and avoid cold, wet soil. ## Form and safety In native habitat the species may reach about 13 feet, but it is smaller in cultivation. Stems carry sharp spines and handling can injure skin, so use sturdy gloves and long sleeves when repotting or pruning. Orange, red, or yellow-green flowers may appear in spring or summer on established outdoor plants; flowering is uncommon in containers. ## Maintenance Use a fast-draining cactus mix and a pot with open drainage. During the growing season, water only after the mix dries; keep winter watering minimal, especially in cool or humid conditions. Wear protective gloves whenever handling the plant.
