Alphonse Karr bamboo is a vigorous, evergreen clumping selection of Bambusa multiplex, grown for golden-yellow canes marked with green and fine green foliage. Its upright, expanding clump works as a tall screen or hedge in warm climates, with mature height and spread varying with climate, water and growing space.
## Form and landscape use
The [Palmco cultivar profile](https://www.palmco.com/alphonse-karr-bamboo.html) identifies the cultivar as Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonse Karr’, describes the striped golden canes and tight clumping habit, and reports an average height around 20 feet. It recommends spacing plants 8–10 feet apart for a continuous hedge. The [NC State Extension profile for B. multiplex](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/bambusa-multiplex/) lists Alphonse Karr among the species’ cultivars and gives a broader species range of 10–25 feet high and 4–6 feet wide; this helps explain why mature plants vary.
## Siting
Grow in full sun to partial shade in a warm site. Palmco reports zones 8B–11 and cold tolerance near 15°F; local exposure and duration of cold affect damage, so the catalog’s broader zone range should be treated as approximate. Established plants tolerate some dry periods, but regular water supports vigorous growth. Avoid crowding buildings, paths or utilities because the clump and canopy become substantial.
## Maintenance
Thin older or damaged canes at ground level and selectively trim the outer growth when a defined screen is needed. Keep new plants watered while establishing; once established, adjust irrigation to heat, rainfall and soil drainage. A clumping bamboo expands outward gradually and still needs adequate room.
