Create design onlineAbout Fernleaf Bamboo
Fernleaf bamboo is an evergreen clumping bamboo with unusually fine, densely arranged leaves that give the upright green canes a soft, fernlike texture. This compact selection is used for low screens, hedges and containers in warm gardens, though size can increase in ideal conditions.
## Form and placement
The [Plant Delights Nursery profile](https://www.plantdelights.com/products/bambusa-multiplex-fernleaf) identifies ‘Fernleaf’ as a clumping cultivar, usually about 9–10 feet tall, and notes that unusually favorable conditions can produce taller plants. NC State Extension describes the parent species, B. multiplex, as evergreen and clumping, with a general species size range wider than this compact selection.
## Growing conditions
Provide full sun or partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Plant Delights lists zones 7b–10b; hardiness depends on exposure and winter severity, and foliage or canes may be damaged by severe cold. The dense clump can form a screen but should be given room to widen. Container culture is possible with a large pot and consistent watering.
## Maintenance
Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged dry weather. Remove old or damaged canes at the base and trim lightly to keep a hedge within its allotted space. Do not assume that clumping means the plant will remain small; allow for gradual outward expansion.
