About Bamboo

Bambusa vulgaris, commonly called common bamboo, is a large evergreen clumping bamboo cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Its tall, upright-to-arching culms may be bright green or yellow with green striping, while the leafy canopy forms a broad, dense screen. The species is useful for screening and traditional material uses, but it needs ample space and a warm climate. ## Form and landscape role The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/1972/bambusa-vulgaris/details) describes this species as a giant clumping bamboo, over 12 metres tall and over 8 metres wide, with green or green-striped yellow canes. It notes that size in the native habitat can exceed 20 metres. [Kew’s Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:392574-1/general-information) accepts Bambusa vulgaris and places its native range from Assam to Yunnan and Indo-China, primarily in wet tropical biomes. Height and spread vary considerably with climate, growing conditions and whether a plant is cultivated or naturalized. ## Growing conditions Provide full sun to partial shade and moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil in a sheltered position. The RHS cautions that this vigorous species is not suited to average-sized gardens and can become difficult to control. Its clumping habit is distinct from running bamboos, but the large clump and canopy still need substantial clearance from buildings, paths and utilities. The catalog’s USDA zone range is retained as existing guidance; the opened botanical references do not provide a directly comparable USDA range. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and prolonged dry weather. Thin selected older stems at ground level when needed to manage density and improve access; the RHS reports that routine pruning is not required. Check [local guidance](https://assessment.ifas.ufl.edu/assessments/bambusa-vulgaris/) before planting where the species is naturalized or where large bamboo clumps are restricted; regional assessments are not uniform.
