About Plum Rosy False Indigo

Baptisia ‘Plum Rosy’ is an upright false indigo whose rosy-purple flowers lighten as they mature, creating a two-tone effect. Walters Gardens lists it at 3½–4 feet tall and wide, with a vase-like habit and hardiness in zones 4–9. [The Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/521090/baptisia-plum-rosy/details) also describes the cultivar, while noting that its name status is unresolved in that database. ## Landscape Use Use ‘Plum Rosy’ in a sunny mixed border, native planting, or meadow edge where its branching flower stems have room to rise. Its mature clump can provide structure among lower perennials; avoid planting it where it will need frequent relocation. ## Seasonal Interest The rosy-purple spring flowers become paler as they age. The cultivar’s upright stems and broadening clump contribute form beyond the bloom period. Flower timing varies with climate and site. ## Mature Size Walters Gardens reports 3½–4 feet in both height and width. RHS gives a broader height estimate of 0.5–1 m and a narrower spread estimate of 0.1–0.5 m, so mature dimensions vary across references. ## Siting and Soil Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Baptisia forms substantial roots and is best left in place once established. The breeder lists USDA zones 4–9; RHS lists its own H7 rating, which is not converted here. ## Maintenance Water while establishing and during extended dry spells. RHS notes that mature plants tolerate drought. Allow the clump to develop naturally and remove old stems when they no longer contribute to the planting.
