About Black Basselinia

Black Basselinia (*Basselinia pancheri*) is a New Caledonian palm usually growing as a solitary, slender-trunked tree. Its rigid, ascending leaves and colorful leaf sheath create a clean, upright silhouette, while the mature fruits are glossy black. ## Landscape use Kew accepts the botanical name and records the species from western and southern New Caledonia ([Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:664841-1/general-information)). Endemia describes it as usually solitary, to about 10 m, with rigid leaves and glossy black mature fruit in wet forest on ultramafic soils ([Endemia](https://endemia.nc/flore/fiche1101)). A distinctive specimen for a warm, humid garden, this palm is native to the understory of dense wet forest and also occurs in secondary forest on ultramafic substrates. It can reach about 10 m in the regional species account, with some New Caledonian field references reporting plants to 15 m. Its upright crown and relatively narrow trunk suit a sheltered position where the foliage and crownshaft remain visible. ## Siting and water Provide filtered light or partial shade and regular moisture in a freely draining soil. Its native range spans varied elevations, but the records describe wet forest rather than frost tolerance; they should not be interpreted as evidence for cold-hardiness. Mature width may vary with the crown and growing conditions. ## Maintenance Keep moisture steady during active growth and protect the crown from cold, drying exposure. Remove only dead leaves, preserving healthy foliage and the growing point.
