About Basselinia velutina

Basselinia velutina is a solitary New Caledonian palm with a ringed trunk and pinnate crown. The [Province Sud palm guide](https://www.province-sud.nc/wp-content/Guides/2022-ApprendreAReconnaitreLesPalmiers/) reports plants to about 15 m and records the species from elevations of roughly 600–1,620 m. ## Landscape use Use this tall palm as a specimen in a warm, sheltered garden or conservatory where its trunk and crown have room to develop. A humid setting and protection from cold winds suit its New Caledonian origin. ## Siting and water As a cautious cultivation approach, provide filtered light and a freely draining medium that stays evenly moist; the cited regional guide does not prescribe garden care. In containers, use a large pot with drainage holes and water thoroughly, then allow excess water to escape. ## Maintenance Keep moisture steady during warm weather and remove only dead or damaged leaves. Protect container plants from sudden cold and drying air.
