Create design onlineAbout Shadow King® Black Cherry - Begonia
Shadow King® Black Cherry is a compact rex begonia grown for its dark, patterned leaves. Its upright, spreading mound makes a strong foliage accent in shade containers, mixed planters or protected garden beds.
## Size and foliage
The [DGI grower profile](https://www.dgiplants.com/2015-reviews/spring-2015/951-shadow-king-begonias) identifies Black Cherry with U.S. plant patent PP24717 and describes ruffled deep red leaves edged in black. The patent names cultivar KRBELIN02 and records shiny dark red and dark purple-to-black foliage on a compact, upright, spreading mound. DGI gives the Shadow King series a garden height of 8–12 inches and about 6 inches of spread; the patent reports a 12-week greenhouse-grown plant about 41.8 cm wide. These measurements reflect different settings, so allow flexible space as the plant develops.
## Growing conditions
Rex begonias are grown mainly for their foliage. The [North Carolina Extension guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/begonia-rex-types/) recommends bright indirect light, humidity and moist, well-drained soil. DGI uses Shadow Kings in containers and shaded landscape settings.
## Maintenance
Water when the mix begins to dry and let excess drain freely. Remove damaged leaves and keep the plant out of frost; indoors, avoid harsh direct sun and dry air.
