About Shadow King® Wintergreen - Begonia

Shadow King® Wintergreen is a rex begonia grown for pale green leaves with copper tones and dark veining. Its mounded foliage suits large containers and shaded beds. ## Foliage and placement The [Millcreek Gardens cultivar profile](https://catalog.millcreekplants.com/begonia-shadow-king-wintergreen-ppaf) describes Wintergreen’s jagged pale green leaves, copper tint and black veining, and recommends shade or partial shade. DGI’s [Shadow King series review](https://www.dgiplants.com/2015-reviews/spring-2015/951-shadow-king-begonias) recommends the series for shady beds and containers. ## Size guidance Millcreek lists Wintergreen at 6–12 inches tall with a 15–18 inch spread. DGI gives the broader Shadow King series an approximate 8–12 inch height and 6 inch spread. Because these mature-size references differ, allow room for the wider spread and adjust spacing as the plant establishes. ## Growing conditions Use loose, well-drained soil in shade or partial shade. DGI notes that Shadow Kings have shallow, spreading roots and benefit from a wet-to-dry watering cycle once established. ## Maintenance Water when the soil begins to dry and let excess drain freely. Remove damaged leaves and protect the foliage from strong direct sun.
