Begonia T REX™ 'Ruby Slippers'

T REX® ‘Ruby Slippers’ is a Terra Nova hybrid begonia grown for glossy ruby-red foliage with a dark stripe along the leaf midrib. The breeder lists a mature size of about 41 cm tall and wide and describes it as vigorous in both cooler greenhouse conditions and heat ([Terra Nova product profile](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/begonia-t-rex-ruby-slippers/)). ### Seasonal display Terra Nova lists pink flowers from June through October, a mounding habit, full shade, and hardiness zones 9–11. The catalog’s existing zone 8 minimum is retained because Terra Nova reports additional cold tolerance across the T REX series, though local overwintering depends on conditions and protection. The breeder identifies US patent PP24992 and EU grant EU43392 for this cultivar. ### Placement Use as a foliage feature in a shaded border or mixed container. Terra Nova recommends fertile, moist soil with good porosity; the leaves provide the strongest visual effect, with flowers as a seasonal accent. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone evenly moist but well drained. Provide shade, avoid overhead irrigation where possible, and remove damaged leaves as needed. Grow seasonally or protect the root area where winter cold exceeds local hardiness.
