About AmeriHybrid® Picotee Lace Red Tuberous Begonia

AmeriHybrid® Picotee Lace Red is an upright tuberous begonia with large double red flowers edged in white. It flowers from late spring into autumn and brings a bright bicolor display to sheltered containers and shade plantings. ## Flowers and size PanAmerican Seed describes the Lace Red selection as red with a white edge and lists it in the AmeriHybrid® Picotee F1 Series. The series is listed at 14–20 inches tall and 10–12 inches wide. [Ball Seed’s plant information](https://info.ballseed.com/WEBTRACKPLANTINFO.ASPX?PHID=009408603007448&env=P) identifies the exact selection, flower colors, habit, season, and dimensions; [PanAmerican Seed’s catalog](https://www.panamseed.com/PdfAssets/pdfpage.aspx?pdfid=301) describes the Picotee Lace pattern. ## Siting Grow it in partial or dappled shade, sheltered from strong wind, in organically rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. Tuberous begonias need protection from drying conditions, while soggy soil can rot the tuber. Containers need open drainage and foliage benefits from good air circulation. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/begonia-tuberous-types/) describes the group's light and soil needs and its use in containers and window boxes. ## Seasonal care Use it as a warm-season bedding or container plant where winters freeze. Before frost, move a container to a frost-free place or lift and dry the tuber for cool, dry storage through winter. Tuberous begonias usually flower from early summer until the first frost. ## Maintenance Water when rainfall is insufficient, checking containers more often as they dry. Remove spent flowers and damaged leaves, keep drainage open, and avoid crowding to limit foliar disease. Reduce watering as foliage yellows in fall. Keep tubers and sap away from pets and children; roots contain soluble calcium oxalates and sap can irritate skin.
