About On Top® Melon Lace Tuberous Begonia

On Top® Melon Lace is a compact, mounded tuberous begonia with melon-colored petals edged in white. PanAmerican Seed lists the On Top® Series F1 at 10–12 inches high and wide, with large flowers on a rounded plant. ## Flowers and form The breeder describes Melon Lace as melon with a white edge in its [2026–2027 catalog](https://catalog.panamseed.com/view/445948364/36/). The series produces many 2–5-inch flowers and is promoted for its novelty colors and earlier, longer flowering than other begonias. Its size suits patio containers, window boxes and sheltered border fronts. ## Siting Tuberous begonias grow best in partial or dappled shade and organically rich soil that stays moist while draining freely. They do not tolerate drought, and standing water can rot the tuber. On Top selections tolerate more heat and sunlight than many begonias, though protection from harsh afternoon sun and wind can help in hot or exposed sites. Containers make drainage and shelter easier to manage. ## Seasonal growing Tuberous begonias usually flower from early summer until frost. In cold-winter climates, move pots to a frost-free place or lift and store tubers dry before the first frost, then restart them in late winter. ## Maintenance Check containers often because they dry faster than garden beds. Remove spent flowers and damaged leaves, allow air to move around the foliage, and avoid persistently wet soil. Reduce watering as leaves yellow in autumn and protect dormant tubers from freezing and excess moisture.
