Create design onlineAbout On Top® Sunset Shades Tuberous Begonia
On Top® Sunset Shades is a compact, mounded tuberous begonia with yellow flowers edged in red. PanAmerican Seed lists the On Top® Series F1 at 10–12 inches high and wide, with many 2–5-inch flowers on a rounded plant.
## Flowers and form
The [2026–2027 PanAmerican Seed catalog](https://catalog.panamseed.com/view/445948364/36/) identifies Sunset Shades as yellow with a red edge and describes the On Top series as mounded, early flowering and longer blooming than other begonias. The compact habit suits patio pots, window boxes and sheltered border fronts.
## Siting
Tuberous begonias grow best in partial or dappled shade and organically rich soil that stays moist while draining freely. They do not tolerate drought, and standing water can rot the tuber. On Top selections tolerate more heat and sunlight than many begonias, although protection from harsh afternoon sun and wind can help in hot or exposed sites. Containers make drainage and shelter easier to manage.
## Seasonal growing
Tuberous begonias usually flower from early summer until frost. In cold-winter climates, move pots to a frost-free place or lift and store tubers dry before the first frost, then restart them in late winter.
## Maintenance
Check containers often, remove spent flowers and damaged leaves, and allow air to move around foliage. Reduce watering as leaves yellow in autumn and protect dormant tubers from freezing and excess moisture.
