Create design onlineAbout On Top® Surprise Tuberous Begonia
On Top® Surprise is a mounded tuberous begonia with a mix of white and pink/rose bicolor flowers. PanAmerican Seed lists the On Top® Series F1 at 10–12 inches high and wide, with many 2–5-inch blooms and an early, extended flowering season.
## Flowers and form
The breeder’s [2026–2027 On Top catalog](https://catalog.panamseed.com/view/445948364/36/) names Surprise and describes its flowers as a mix of white and pink/rose bicolors. Its rounded form and abundant flowers suit containers, window boxes and sheltered border fronts.
## Siting
Tuberous begonias grow best in partial or dappled shade and organically rich soil that stays moist while draining freely. Avoid drought stress, standing water and strong wind. The On Top series is selected to tolerate more heat and sunlight than many begonias, though partial shade remains a dependable setting; containers make shelter and drainage easier to manage.
## Seasonal growing
Tuberous begonias usually flower from early summer until frost. In cold-winter climates, bring pots to a frost-free place or lift and store tubers dry before the first frost, then restart them in late winter.
## Maintenance
Check containers often, remove spent flowers and damaged leaves, and allow air to move around foliage. Reduce watering as leaves yellow in autumn and protect dormant tubers from freezing. See [NC State Extension’s tuberous begonia guidance](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/begonia-tuberous-types/) for general growing and storage advice.
