Naked Lady Lily is Amaryllis belladonna, a South African bulb that sends up fragrant pink flowers after its strap-shaped leaves have died back. Its sudden late-summer display suits sunny, dry gardens where a dormant summer appearance is expected.
## Seasonal display
The [North Carolina Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/amaryllis-belladonna/) identifies Naked Lady as Amaryllis belladonna and describes clusters of pink, trumpet-shaped flowers in late summer to fall. [UC Cooperative Extension](https://ucanr.edu/site/mg-sonoma/amaryllis-belladonna-naked-lady-lilly) explains the leafless flowering stems, spring foliage dieback, fragrant blooms and bulbs’ sensitivity to disturbance.
## Size and siting
Mature plants are commonly about 2–3 feet tall and wide. Plant bulbs in full sun and well-drained soil; the foliage grows in spring, then dies back before flowering. In colder regions, bulbs need to be lifted and stored in a warmer place.
## Maintenance
Allow the foliage to grow and yellow naturally so the bulb can replenish itself. Avoid frequent moving or dividing because disturbance can delay flowering for several years. All parts are toxic if eaten, especially the bulbs, so site them away from children and pets that may chew plants.
