Mentor Barberry

Mentor barberry is the hybrid Berberis × mentorensis, an upright, rounded shrub with dark green foliage, yellow spring flowers and red-orange autumn color. It was developed from Berberis julianae and B. thunbergii and is commonly used as a hedge or barrier shrub; see the [Oregon State University profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/berberis-mentorensis) for the hybrid parentage. ## Landscape use Use it in a hedge, foundation planting or mixed shrub border where its thorny branches can be kept clear of regular foot traffic. The [University of Illinois Extension](https://web.extension.illinois.edu/shrubselector/detail_plant.cfm?PlantID=349) describes its multi-stemmed rounded form and lists it for hedges, borders and screens. Oregon State University likewise identifies it as the hybrid of B. julianae and B. thunbergii. ## Size and siting Extension sources place mature height and width at roughly 5–7 feet. Provide full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil; avoid wet sites. The University of Illinois lists USDA hardiness zones 5–8. ## Maintenance Water while establishing, then allow the soil to drain between watering. Prune after flowering if you need to shape a hedge, using gloves because the stems carry sharp spines. The small spring flowers are less showy than those of some barberries, while the shrub’s dense form and autumn foliage color contribute more of its landscape value.
