Create design onlineAbout Upright Red-Purple Barberry
‘Helmond Pillar’ is an upright, narrow Japanese barberry with reddish foliage and a more vertical outline than rounded dwarf selections. It can add a column of color in a mixed shrub border or serve as a compact accent where a broad shrub would take too much room.
## Form and Foliage
The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/42519/berberis-thunbergii-f-atropurpurea-helmond-pillar/details) describes a narrow, upright habit, brownish-red leaves, and a mature height around 1.5 metres. [Red Butte Garden](https://redbuttegarden.org/plants/species/1009/) reports a smaller spread than height and lists the plant for zones 4–8. These profiles support the cultivar identity and its columnar character; individual size varies with growing conditions.
## Flowers and Fruit
Small pale-yellow flowers appear in late spring, followed by red berries in autumn that may persist into winter. The flowers are modest, while the foliage and upright shape carry most of the landscape effect.
## Siting
Plant in full sun or part shade and provide well-drained soil. Sun generally supports stronger foliage color. The species has thorny stems, so leave enough clearance beside paths and access points.
The [Bellevue College profile](https://www.bellevuecollege.edu/sustainability/sustainbc/natural-systems/arboretum/climate-futures-corridor/helmond-pillar-barberry/) also reports a 4–5 ft height and 1–3 ft spread.
## Maintenance
Water through establishment and during extended dry spells. Prune selectively after flowering if the outline needs correction, keeping the naturally narrow shape rather than shearing it into a broad hedge.
