Cherry Bomb® is the trade name for the Japanese barberry cultivar ‘Monomb’, a compact, dense shrub with reddish-purple foliage. It is suited to a low hedge, barrier, or mixed border where its color and thorny branches can be placed with care.
## Identity and Form
[Monrovia’s Cherry Bomb profile](https://www.monrovia.com/cherry-bomb-japanese-barberry.html) identifies the cultivar as ‘Monomb’ and describes a plant about 3–4 feet tall and wide. The [Canadian Food Inspection Agency technical reference](https://inspection.canada.ca/en/plant-health/horticulture/horticulture-manuals/technical-reference-r-004) also connects the cultivar name Monomb with the Cherry Bomb trade name and notes it was selected as a sport of ‘Crimson Pygmy’. Its listed compact dimensions are consistent with a rounded shrub, though site and pruning affect mature size.
## Foliage and Flowers
The leaves are reddish purple, and small yellow flowers appear in spring. Red berries can persist into fall and winter, providing seasonal interest and food for wildlife. The bright leaf color is strongest in a sunny position.
## Placement
Use full sun and well-drained soil. Keep the thorny branches away from tight paths and play areas. Its density can help define a low boundary, but provide enough space for the mature spread.
## Maintenance
Water regularly during establishment and in prolonged dry conditions. Prune to maintain a clear boundary or remove damaged branches, taking care around the thorns.
