About Crimson Pygmy Barberry

Crimson Pygmy is a dwarf Japanese barberry with reddish-purple foliage and a broad, rounded, dense habit. Its low outline and dark leaves provide a compact accent along a border or within a small shrub planting. ## Form and Foliage The [University of Illinois woody-plant collection](https://woodyplants.nres.uiuc.edu/plant/berthcp) identifies the exact cultivar and describes a dense, uniform, broad-rounded plant about 1½–2 feet tall. The [University of Florida profile](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FP066) describes Crimson Pygmy as about two feet tall and three feet across. It is a deciduous selection; full sun supports strong foliage color. ## Placement Use the compact shrub at a border edge, in a mixed planting, or as a repeated low accent. Japanese barberry tolerates several soil types, but a well-drained site helps avoid prolonged root wetness. Its spiny stems need clearance from narrow paths and play areas. ## Seasonal Interest Purple and reddish tones make the foliage the main feature throughout the growing season. The dense mound contrasts well with green or gold plants, and its small scale works near the front of a mixed shrub border. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and monitor the plant during extended dry spells. Remove damaged or crossing stems and prune lightly to maintain the allotted space. Wear gloves while working around the spines.
