About Golden Nugget™ Dwarf Yellow Barberry

Golden Nugget™ is the trade name for Berberis thunbergii ‘Monlers’, a dwarf, dense, compact barberry selected for slow growth and golden foliage. Its yellow leaves turn red-orange in autumn, giving the small mound a seasonal shift in color. ## Form and Foliage The [Canadian Food Inspection Agency cultivar profile](https://inspection.canada.ca/en/plant-health/horticulture/horticulture-manuals/technical-reference-r-004) identifies ‘Monlers’ as Golden Nugget and reports plants up to about 30 centimetres tall and 45 centimetres wide. The [Canadian Plant Varieties Journal](https://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2008/inspection/A27-13-67E.pdf) describes the cultivar’s golden-yellow foliage changing to red-orange in fall and its selection for compact, slow growth. ## Placement Use the dense shrub as a low accent or along the front of a border where its foliage can brighten a small space. Japanese barberry has spiny branches, so leave room for pruning and keep it clear of narrow paths. ## Seasonal Interest Golden-yellow leaves are the main growing-season feature, with red-orange tones developing in autumn. Foliage color can vary with light and local conditions. ## Maintenance Allow the natural compact mound to develop. Remove damaged or crossing stems as needed and use gloves when pruning. Water while the shrub establishes and avoid persistently wet soil.
