William Penn barberry is an evergreen hybrid shrub with spiny branches, glossy green leaves, yellow spring flowers, and red berries. North Carolina State Extension describes its parentage, rounded growth, mature size, and hardiness.
## Garden Use
Use this dense shrub for a low hedge, barrier, or mixed border. Its mature spread is similar to its height, so allow room for the rounded branches and keep them clear of narrow paths.
## Size and Site
NC State reports a mature height and width of 3–5 feet and USDA zones 6–9. Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogged sites; newly planted shrubs benefit from regular watering while roots establish.
## Seasonal Interest
The glossy evergreen leaves provide year-round structure, with yellow flowers in early spring and red berries later in the season. Winter injury may occur in colder sites.
## Maintenance
The naturally rounded growth usually needs only occasional shaping. Wear gloves when pruning the thorny stems. Inspect damaged foliage for sawfly or powdery mildew.
