Bergenia is a genus of evergreen, rhizomatous perennials grown for large glossy leaves and clusters of bell-shaped flowers. Leaf color, flower color, and mature size vary among the many species and cultivated selections.
## Garden Use
Many Bergenias work as low ground cover or edging in mixed borders. Their broad leaves contrast with fine-textured plants, while spring flowers add color above the foliage. Choose a cultivar when a particular size or flower color is needed.
## Foliage and Flowers
Leaves are often evergreen and may turn red, bronze, or purple in cool weather. Flowers are commonly pink, red, or white, and most garden forms bloom in spring. The RHS describes typical clumps around 30 cm tall that spread gradually, with cultivar size varying around that pattern.
## Siting and Soil
Grow in sun or shade in soil that drains well. Deep shade can reduce flowering, and waterlogged soil should be avoided. Water new plantings during dry weather while they establish.
## Maintenance
Remove damaged leaves and faded flower stems as needed. Divide established clumps if they become congested. These recommendations apply generally to the genus; check specific cultivar needs when known.
